The Committee on Madhouses asked Thomas Greenaway, a Governor of the Hospital who visited it once a month, to explain recent improvements in the Hospital's management. He said: “I attribute it in a great degree to the new Steward [with responsibility for male patients] and Matron [with responsibility for male patients] ...... it was considered that they were not to begin their duties till they went to the new house; but ...... it was judged very desirable to take the new Matron and the new Steward to the old Bethlem Hospital.”
