Report

Everts wrote about his visit to Hofheim Asylum on page 19 of a report he sent to the provincial authorities of Noord-Holland on 22 February 1848, which is now held at Haarlem's Rijksarchief in Noord-Holland, Toegang 16, Inv. No. 2380.

Everts reported that the large general mental institution of Hessen-Darmstadt, Hofheim, consisted of an extensive series of buildings formerly used by a monastic community. A couple of years prior to Everts’ visit, a new building for female patients was constructed, and in 1847, the year of his visit, a new administration building had been built. However, Everts found the complex to be inadequate and unfit for purpose. The original monastery buildings had crumbling exteriors and cramped, low-ceilinged interiors. While the new buildings were in a better state of repair, they too were uncomfortably small, especially when considered in relation to the number of patients housed in them, having been built with low ceilings and narrow corridors.

Everts observed that the asylum, though located within sight of mountains in the far distance, occupied open, flat and low terrain, three hours’ travel from Darmstadt and fifteen minutes from a village called Kromstadt. The gardens and fields that surrounded its buildings seemed featureless and unattractive to him. Everts had been told of a proposal to convert Hofheim into a so-called Siegenanstalt for the care of the incurably ill, or else to close it altogether, and transfer its patients to a completely new facility in the area of Giessen.

Hofheim did not compare well to other institutions Everts had visited in respect of its buildings. Everts regarded the condition of the old buildings as frankly deplorable. The new buildings, which accounted for only a fraction of the entire accommodation, were themselves inadequate and above all cramped.

Everts noticed that, here as elsewhere, the administration of the hospital and medical oversight of its patients were the separate responsibilities of the hospital director and the chief medical officer respectively. He reported that everything that he saw and heard during his visit to Hofheim had confirmed him in the belief that arrangements like these were unsatisfactory, as they did not promote the unity of purpose which Everts thought was needed in a mental institution.

Hofheim, het groote algemeene krankzinnigen gesticht van Hessen-Darmstadt, almede een uitgestrekt uit verschillende gebouwen zamengesteld oud klooster; waar aan voor eenige jaren een nieuw gebouw voor de afdeeling der vrouwen en nog in 1847 een nieuwe Oeconomie gebouw is toegevoegd. Het geheel is echter zeer gebrekkig en voor het doel ongeschikt. De oude kloostergebouwen zijn bouwvallig en ten deele zeer laag van verdieping; de nieuwe gebouwen hebben bij veel goeds, echter ook groote gebreken voornamelijk eene te lage verdieping, over ’t algemeen zeer smalle, op sommige plaatsen bijna onbruikbare gangen, en overal gebrek aan ruimte in verhouding tot het aantal patiënten.

Hofheim ligt op een open, vlake, laag terrein en ofschoon het eenige tuinen en akkerland bezit is het echter geheel ontbloot van hoog geboomte en alle andere natuurschoonheden, slechts zeer verre in het verschiet, bespeurt men hooge bergen. Jet ligt 3 uur van Darmstadt en op ¼ uurs afstands van het onbeduidend plaatsje Kromstadt.

Er was een voorstel gedaan, om een geheel nieuw gesticht in den omstreek van Giessen te bouwen en hofheim als krankzinnigen gesticht op te heffen of des noods als zoogenaamde Siegenanstalt, ter verpleging van volstrekt onherstelbaren, te behouden.

Wat betreft de gebouwen, staat Hofheim bij alle overige gestichten op de achtergrond, want hoewel het twee nieuwe gebouwen bezit, maken deze echter slechts een zeer klein gedeelte van het geheel uit. Bovendien zijn ze nog zeer gebrekkig en vooral zeer bekrompen ingericht, terwijl de oude gebouwen van Hofheim in een hoogst ellendige toestand verkeren. Bij Hofheim is er een aparte directeur naast de eerste geneesheer (bij de meeste gestichten is de eerste geneesheer ook de directeur). Uit al hetgeen ik te Hofheim gezien en gehoord heb, bleek het mij, dat er tussen de directeur en geneesheer, niet de eenheid en overeenstemming bestond, welke in een krankzinnigen gesticht, niet zonder groot nadeel voor de inrichting kan gemist worden.
