Everts' account of his visits to Eberbach and Eichberg Asylums (1847)

Location: nr. Kassel, Hessen, Duchy of Nassau

Everts wrote about his visit to Eberbach and Eichberg Asylums on pages 18-19 of a report he sent to the provincial authorities of Noord-Holland on 22 February 1848, which is now held at Haarlem's Rijksarchief in Noord-Holland, Toegang 16, Inv. No. 2380.

Everts reported that provision for the mentally ill of the Duchy of Nassau was in transition at the time of his visit to Eberbach asylum, located between Oestreich and Eldrille not far from the Rhine. Formerly a monastery: Eberbach had for some years housed both asylum and prison facilities. Everts observed that the part used to house mental patients contained many fine rooms of various sizes, wide spacious corridors and an annex which was later added for agitated patients (onrustigen en razenden). The surrounds were extremely beautiful, but the building was situated at the bottom of the valley, almost as if, according to Everts, it were in a cauldron of surrounding mountains, hidden behind imposing forests.

Everts reported that a brand new institution called Eichberg was in the process of construction about ten minutes away from Eberbach. At the time of his visit, it was believed that it would be possible to transfer patients from Eberbach in the spring of 1848. Eichberg was located on a low hilltop close to the Rhine and within sight of Mount Johannis (Johannisberg). A scenic oak forest lies behind the new building, and clear unobstructed views of the entire region as far as Maintz may be enjoyed from its front. Eichberg's designs were on a grand scale, according to Everts, containing two entirely separate wards, each of which are sub-divided into a series of attractive rooms of varying sizes. The plan was to transfer the majority of Eberbach's mental patient population to Eichberg, but maintain facilities at Eberbach for the care of its elderly and/or chronic patients, including those suffering from epilepsy, general paralysis of the insane or idiocy.

Among the newer institutions of its type, Eichberg boasted the highest ratio of rooms to patients. Everts attributed this feature to the fact that the man responsible for the design of Eichberg (Lindpaitner, director of both asylum and prison at Eberbach, and director-in-waiting of Eichberg) was not in fact a medical man. Everts remarked that Eberbach's separation of hospital administration from the medical oversight of its patients appeared to be a recipe for conflict between its director and chief medical officer, and was certainly undesirable as far as the institution as a whole was concerned.

Extract
