Guislain's account of his visit to the Ospedale San Servolo, Venice (1838)

Location: Isola San Servolo, Venice, Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia

Guislain wrote about his visit to the Ospedale San Servolo on pages 244-246 of his Lettres Médicales sur l'Italie avec Quelques Renseignements sur la Suisse: Résumé d'un Voyage fait en 1838, Adressé à la Société de Médecine de Gand (F. & E. Gyselynck : Ghent 1840).

At the time of Guislain’s visit, the Ospedale San Servolo accommodated 250 patients. Guislain reported that it was an elongated building with several floors and two separate wings leading off the main building. Its cells for incoming mental patients had, he wrote, a splendid view over Venice. These cells were used when patients first arrived at the hospital for observation and classification according to their respective disorders. Most hospital beds were made of wood. Guislain reported that the instruments of physical restraint used at San Servolo were no different to almost anywhere else in Italy: leather muffs with ribbons that tie the hands, as well as iron bands. He also reported meeting with Dr. Sacardo, the hospital’s physician, and seeing a group of male patients coming down the stairs. Excited, screaming and violent, they seemed to him to be like cattle. Guislain felt that the patients needed access to outdoor activities, and bemoaned the fact that they had little to occupy their time.
