Report

Morison wrote about his visit to the Charenton (Hôpital Esquirol), Paris in his diary entry for 27 March 1818. The diary is now held at the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh.

Went to the madhouse at Charenton which is not so well kept as the Salpêtrière. I did not [h]ave a satisfactory [view] of it, but from what I observed I was led to the above opinion. There is a cold bath into which we were told that patients are sometimes thrown by surprise. I saw a long basket in which is a bed - the basket has a cover to fasten the patient into the basket leaving out only his head.
