Report

Everts wrote about his visit to Prague Asylum on pages 16-17 & 45 of a report he sent to the provincial authorities of Noord-Holland on 22 February 1848, which is now held at Haarlem's Rijksarchief in Noord-Holland, Toegang 16, Inv. No. 2380.

Everts reported that asylum accommodation in Prague was comprised of a ward for chronic patients (in buildings formerly used as a monastery) and a newly built ward for acute patients. The two buildings were separated from one another by fairly large, picturesque gardens. Everts observed that the chronic ward was similar in shape, size and inner layout to that at Zweifalten, and that the new acute ward was excellent in every respect, one of the best buildings he had encountered during his trip.

He regards the location of the institution (on one of the hilltops on Prague's outskirts, but within its city limits) as rather odd. He admits that its view of the lower part of the city and the surrounding countryside is beautiful and striking, but remarks that its location and lack of outdoor space limits scope for agricultural and other therapeutic activities. Of all the institutions that Everts visited, Prague asylum had the smallest number of dormitories: four for a total of one hundred patients.

Het gesticht te Praag bestaat uit een voormalig kloostergebouw, thans het verplegings-gesticht en een geheel nieuw kolossaal en grootsch gebouw voor genezingsgesticht ingericht. Beide zijn door de fraaije tamelijk groote tuinen van elkander afgescheiden. Het verplegingsgesticht komt in vorm, grootte en inwendige inrichting zeer veel met het bovengenoemde verplegingsgesticht Zwiefalten overeen.

Het nieuwe gebouw of genezingsgesticht is een groot trotsch gebouw en in alle opzigten uitmuntent te noemen. De ligging van het gesticht is zeer eigenaardig, namelijk op een der heuvelen van Praag zelve, weliswaar aan de buitenzijde, doch altijd binnen den omtrek der Stad. Het uitzicht op het lagere gedeelte en de omgevende gecultiveerde heuvelen en bergen der Stad is schoon en treffend, de ligging echter is eenigzints onvrij en het eigen terrein beperkt.

In het gesticht te Praag trof ik bijzonderheid aan, dat in elke afdeeling, één of twee paren gehuwde lieden, zonder kinderen, woonden, waar van de man het opzigt had, over mannelijke patiënten, terwijl de vrouw met reiniging der localen, ook in de afdeeling der mannen, belast was.
