Guislain's account of his visit to the Ospedale San Lazzaro, Reggio Emilia (1838)

Guislain wrote about his visit to the Ospedale San Lazzaro on pages 235-236 of his Lettres Médicales sur l'Italie avec Quelques Renseignements sur la Suisse: Résumé d'un Voyage fait en 1838, Adressé à la Société de Médecine de Gand (F. & E. Gyselynck : Ghent 1840).
In his report, Guislain admitted that he had been unable to actually visit the Ospedale San Lazzaro, a matter of some regret to him in the light of its good reputation throughout Italy. Guislain knew that its superintendent, Dr Galloni, was said to be an excellent manager, and that the institution could accommodate almost a hundred and fifty patients.
Guislain had heard reports to the effect that the principles of moral management held sway at Lazzaro, that patient care is attentive and devoted, and that various entertainments and other diversions were devised for patients. Guislain is not convinced that the provision of entertainment has therapeutic value, but refuses to criticise the practices of an institution he was not able to visit. He notes that M. Brière de Boismont, in his report of his visit, comments on the frequency of diagnoses of alcohol abuse, religious mania and domestic violence.

Hospice Saint-Lazare. Cet établissement jouit en Italie d'une bonne réputation, et ceux qui en ont donné la description le rangent parmi les établissements les mieux dirigés : le soin en est confié à M. le docteur Galloni. La maison peut contenir à peu près cent cinquante aliénés… Le traitement moral est surtout mis en usage; les aliénés y sont l'objet d'une attention continuelle et de soins assidus. On y a créé de nombreux agents de distraction, parmi lesquels il en est dont j'ai entendu faire la critique. N'ayant pas vu cet établissement, je ne puis en parler que par ouïdire, et je suis bien au regret de ne pas avoir pu le visiter… M. Brière-de-Boismont a donné de cet établissement une description détaillée… On y a constaté comme causes fréquentes d'aliénation mentale, l'abus du vin, la religion mal-entendue, la misère et les chagrins domestiques.
