The Ospedale Sant’ Anna was founded in 1443 by Bishop Giovannin Tavelli da Tossignano as a Franciscan house dedicated to the care of pilgrims, beggars, the infirm, lunatics and illegitimate children. For several centuries the building accommodated prisoners as well as patients, among them the late Renaissance
